LING 113: Introduction to Indigenous Language (I)

Purpose
The purpose of the course is to enable the students to basic understand of the reality of indigenous language so as to reflect on and write coherently about a range of issues confronting indigenous languages. The students will also gain knowledge to enable them to appreciate the significance of indigenous languages to their owners, speakers and custodians and implications for communication
Expected Learning Outcomes
1. Gain basic knowledge to be able to access accurate, reliable and up-to-date information on Indigenous Languages.
2. Have a basic linguistic foundation upon which to proceed with the learning and/or documentation of Indigenous Languages
3. Understand and appreciate Kenya’s unique linguistic heritage as well as the underlying causes of language loss in Kenya and efforts to maintain and revive them
4. Appreciate the importance of Indigenous Languages to their owners, speakers and custodians and implications for healing, health and well-being.
5. Understand the nature of the relationships between Indigenous and Foreign languages
Course Content
This course is an introduction to indigenous languages of the Africans/Kenyans and their speakers: e.g. history of settlement, language families, linguistic properties, bilingual education, language policies and attitudes.
Mode of Delivery
The course will be delivered through a combination of face to face and online lectures, seminars, discussions, case studies and library research.

Textbooks, LMS and zoom links, whiteboard marker pens, handouts and library.
Course Assessment
Students taking this course will be assessed through the following methods;
Continuous Assessment Test 15%
Term paper 15%
End of semester examination 70%
